5 documentaries to watch before visiting Torres del Paine
Another season at Las Torres Patagonia is just a few months away. If you already have everything ready to embark on your adventure, it’s time to start your immersion into the world of Torres del Paine National Park. We recommend five documentaries that will help you get to know what you can find in the park and learn a few facts to improve your experience this season.
“OUR GREAT NATIONAL PARKS” WITH BARACK OBAMA
On April 13, 2022, Netflix released one of the many audiovisual productions that former U.S. President Barack Obama has developed after his time in the White House. In the 5-part documentary miniseries “Our Great National Parks,” currently available on Netflix, the former president showcases and tells the stories of different nature reserves around the world.
The second episode, titled “Chilean Patagonia,” is one of the show’s most special in our opinion. The opening sequence reveals how just a few years ago, Obama visited Patagonia along with his wife and daughters and marveled at what the former head of state describes as “untouched wilderness.”
“Human influence has spread across the planet. National parks can protect what's left,” Obama remarks during the episode.

“SAVING PARADISE: TORRES DEL PAINE” BY ARTHUR GAL
As a young boy, Arthur Gal dreamed of living among wild beasts, a dream that finally came true at the age of 20, when he spent four months of his life living in the harsh Alaskan winter working to rehabilitate injured birds of prey.
Mindful of the importance of environmental preservation, he decided to dedicate his life to filming documentaries that connect the history of man and nature.
During the latest edition of Santiago Wild, a Chilean festival dedicated to nature-related documentary films, Gal presented “Saving Paradise: Torres del Paine.”
This 52-minute documentary addresses the efforts to protect the ecosystem within Torres del Paine National Park, featuring our director, Mauricio Kusanovic, who tells the story of Las Torres Patagonia’s efforts to contribute to this mission.

“PATAGONIA: LIFE ON THE EDGE OF THE WORLD” WITH PEDRO PASCAL
Pedro Pascal has become a full-time ambassador of Chilean culture and heritage, a mission that set a new milestone with the documentary series “Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World.” The series’ six episodes dedicated to the nature of Patagonia are available on Amazon Prime Video.
In this journey through the steppes of Chilean Patagonia, the U.S.-based Chilean actor goes into detail about the different natural processes that have occurred in the national park, including the entry of new species in the last century, the creation of the park, and how man and nature have coexisted here for generations.
The series received several awards for its production and development, and also earned Pedro Pascal an Emmy nomination for “Best Narrator.”

“ANIMALS UP CLOSE WITH BERTIE GREGORY”
Bertie Gregory is a famous photographer for National Geographic who has dedicated his life to following different animals around the world. This is clearer than ever in the first episode of his series “Animals Up Close,” available on Disney+, where he returns to Torres del Paine National Park to learn about the life of a puma and her cubs.
During this episode, Bertie Gregory uses state-of-the-art film equipment to immerse us in the day-to-day activities of a mother who must feed her cubs, showing the stark reality of survival in Patagonia.
The episode also features an appearance by a member of the Kusanovic family, the founders of Hotel Las Torres. Jose Antonio Kusanovic demonstrates his work as a dog breeder, who fulfills a very important role in the Torres del Paine ecosystem.

“FANTASTIC FRIENDS” WITH THE PHELPS TWINS
What does Harry Potter have to do with Torres del Paine? You might not think they have much in common, but if you are a fan of both, this may be your favorite recommendation on our list.
Fantastic Friends is a series that is now in its second season, and in the latest season finale, the main character is Las Torres Patagonia. That’s right! The TV show is hosted by actors James and Oliver Phelps, who play the Weasley twins in the British fantasy films, and in this episode they were joined by Mathew Lewis, who plays Neville Longbottom.
During the episode, you will see the Weasley twins meeting employees at the hotel, paying a visit to our manager, walking the trail to Base Torres, and other adventures that you will discover as you watch.
Fantastic Friends is currently only available in some countries, so if you are in the right region, you can watch the episode here.
