What to bring on the W Circuit

  • 4 mins

The trails of Torres del Paine National Park are among the most rewarding hikes you can find anywhere in the world. Each trail will lead you to discover impressive rock formations, explore lush lenga beech forests, calm your mind with the never-ending murmur of flowing water, and witness the colors that crown the skies each day.

The W Circuit is one of the best routes in Patagonia, a zigzagging journey through the southern part of the Paine Massif that, in less than a week, will connect you with the incredible landscapes that make this hike legendary.

Once you've said yes to this adventure, the next question is what to pack. In this blog, we'll look at the five essential items you absolutely must have in your backpack or pockets.

Layers: Your best allies against the Patagonian cold

As Charles Darwin said, adaptability is the key to survival. Given the varied climates you will encounter on the W Circuit, being able to change your clothes as needed without having to move to another location is essential to getting the most out of your visit to the park.

Ideally, you should wear three layers, each made of a different material to suit different needs during your hike. The first layer should help you isolate moisture from your body, especially when you sweat. When sweat turns into cold moisture, it can be risky, so quick-drying materials that prevent extreme sweating are ideal, such as synthetic fabrics or merino wool.

For the second layer, it is best to wear a thermal layer that keeps you warm and prevents body heat from escaping, while allowing moisture to be wicked away periodically. The key here is to wear thin fabrics with synthetic padding.

For the third and final layer, the goal is to protect you from the elements: wind and rain. This calls for materials that prevent the cold wind from getting into your layers, and other waterproof materials that keep you from getting soaked when it rains.

The value of layers is that they allow you to quickly adapt to changing conditions. You simply remove a layer, place it in your backpack, and if you need it again, it will be there for you.

Hiking poles: The extra support you may need in the mountains

Although some hikers prefer to walk the trails without poles, we always recommend bringing them along in case you end up needing them. Trust us, your knees will thank you.

On uneven terrain, such as that of Torres del Paine National Park, a third point of support can be very useful. It allows you to advance along the trail and test the ground before lowering yourself to another point. Just like a sturdy branch, a good hiking pole can be the key to a smooth descent.

It is very important to adjust them to the right height. You don't want them to be too long, like a walking stick, or too short, making you hunch your back. The key is to be able to hold them with your elbows at a 90° angle, which gives you the control you need to handle every part of the trail.

Snacks: Little souvenirs from home

Everyone knows that a little snack can give you the energy boost you need to keep going when your batteries are running low, whether it's chocolate, candy, or even a stick of gum.

Although Las Torres Patagonia has several cafés located strategically throughout the national park, it's not a bad idea to bring something with you to share with fellow adventurers from other countries or simply to have a little taste of home to remind you how far away you are.

Perhaps during your climb to Base Torres Viewpoint, you can make a short video of your favorite snack and upload it to your social media to share how this sweet treat helped you overcome the challenge of getting up close to the granite towers.

Choose your footwear wisely

Exploring Torres del Paine National Park will put incredible trails at your feet and bring you to breathtaking views, but it will also put your feet to the test, so helping them with the right footwear is essential.

We recommend prioritizing the sole and materials. The sole of your footwear should have good grip, both on uneven terrain and wet surfaces. Crossing streams and navigating around rocks along the way will help you reach your destination without any problems.

In terms of materials, it is important to have waterproof footwear, because even if you don't step in water, you may be caught out in the rain at some point. Keeping your feet dry, especially on long hikes, is essential to avoid catching a cold.

Remember, never wear new shoes in Patagonia. We recommend breaking in your hiking boots for at least two weeks before bringing them to the park. Your feet will thank you for it.

Small things that solve big problems

In Patagonia, you need to be prepared for anything. The weather can surprise us with its changing moods, so it's essential to carry a some or all of the following items in your backpack, belt bag, or pockets.

  • Sunscreen. Even if you applied sunscreen before heading out, it's important to reapply it every so often, as absorption and sweat can reduce its effectiveness.
  • Sunglasses. On a cloudless day, the sun be can hard on your eyes. A pair of sunglasses helps reduce eye strain in the constant glare.
  • Quick-drying towel. Very useful for wiping away sweat on your face or neck.
  • First aid kit. It is always best to be prepared for any type of emergency, whether it is a minor injury or stomach or muscle pain. Having the right tools can save you a lot of trouble.
  • Headlamp. Should you fall behind during your hike and your day stretches on longer than expected, being able to see the ground where you are walking is key to avoiding accidents.

If you forgot any of these items or need any other accessories, please visit our Welcome Center, where you can find clothing, equipment, and even snacks to take with you on your hike before setting off on the W Circuit.
