December is a special month for Las Torres Patagonia, not only because it marks the beginning of the holiday season (which we love to celebrate with great joy in all our lodges), but also because it is the anniversary month of our sustainable tourism project. This date allows us to honor the vision of an entrepreneur who saw in Torres del Paine the opportunity to build a dream and share it with the world.
Every December 12, we celebrate another year of our history. And we want to share that celebration with you by revisiting everything that shaped our beginnings and reflecting on what these past 12 months have meant, the milestones we have reached, the adventures shared, and the stories worth telling.
We can’t look back without telling you how this adventure began—and it all goes back to the 1990s, when a surge of international travelers started arriving to this remote corner of the world, eager to marvel at the towering granite peaks of Patagonia.
Antonio Kusanovic Senkovic, the son of Croatian immigrants, saw an opportunity in this new landscape. Together with his family, he built an inn with nine rooms and a restaurant—the very first version of what would eventually become Hotel Las Torres.
Over the years, the inn grew into a hotel, expanding its rooms, excursions, and services while also adding new types of accommodations, including campsites, mountain stays, and cabins.
Today, Hotel Las Torres offers 74 guest rooms, a bar and restaurant, a biointensive garden, a spa, and a stable with nearly 160 horses—all anchored in a commitment to sustainable tourism.
This year, Las Torres Patagonia carried out the second edition of its “10 Volunteers for 10 Days” campaign, an initiative that in 2024 invited U.S. citizens to help rebuild the trail to the Base Torres Viewpoint.
For this new edition, the invitation was extended to citizens of Brazil and Chile, forming a multicultural group of volunteers who worked together on trail reconstruction as well as on outdoor activities such as horseback riding and hiking.
For the 2025 edition, we received a total of 874 applications from adventure tourism and sustainability enthusiasts eager to contribute to one of the country’s most iconic trails and live a unique experience.
In April 2025, we once again celebrated great ideas and impactful conservation practices in sustainable tourism. This year’s edition included an event at Hotel Las Torres that brought together leading voices in conservation and conscientious travel to discuss the future of the industry in the context of climate change.
American Jeremy Sampson, CEO of The Travel Foundation and coauthor of the Glasgow Declaration, urged the industry to adopt “lighthouse leadership” in the face of increasing climate pressure on natural destinations, and proposed transforming tourism into a true driver of conservation and social well-being.
Meanwhile, New Zealander Kiri Goulter, Director of Tourism New Zealand, shared the similarities between Torres del Paine and New Zealand, and explained the strategies that helped transform tourism in her country into a regenerative model that protects nature and supports local communities.
During the Sustainability in Action 2025 event, the NGO AMA Torres del Paine made an important announcement: the organization would officially change its name to Las Torres Patagonia Conservancy.
This change reflects the NGO’s new projects across two major initiatives.
The first is an annual Sustainability Report, which will publicly share data and results from all the environmental and conservation actions carried out by Las Torres Patagonia.
The second initiative involves the creation of a Climate Action Plan, focused on developing sustainable tourism through carbon footprint reduction, renewable energy use, and responsible waste management.
Another highlight of this year was the signing of an agreement with local authorities that will allow hundreds of children to visit Torres del Paine National Park each season. The 10-year initiative will benefit more than 4,500 students.
The first visits took place in October, giving children of various ages the chance to experience the park’s natural landscapes and participate in activities such as reforestation and rescue exercises in extreme environments.
At the “Oscars of tourism,” Hotel Las Torres received one of the region’s most prestigious sustainable tourism honors: South America’s Leading Green Hotel.
The recognition highlights the hotel’s commitment to environmental protection, conservation of local flora and fauna, and its collaborative work with surrounding communities.
Following this award, Hotel Las Torres was also nominated for the global category, competing with other leaders in sustainable tourism worldwide.
In 2024, Hotel Las Torres embarked on one of the most ambitious projects in its history: a multiphase infrastructure renewal.
During the previous season, the hotel unveiled the renovation of all 74 guestrooms, a project inspired by a Contemporary Patagonia concept that creates harmony between interior and exterior spaces, inviting guests to connect with the natural wonders of the national park.
For the 2025–2026 season, guests were welcomed with a newly renovated and modernized Bar Pionero. Local ingredients—such as our home-made syrup—became the stars of the bar’s shelves, and a new bar counter was built to give our bartenders the ideal space to showcase their craft.
With the start of the season, Hotel Las Torres became the epicenter of the world’s leading adventure tourism summit. Authorities, tour operators, journalists, influencers, and other industry representatives enjoyed a Patagonian-style welcome in true Las Torres Patagonia fashion.
The Adventure Travel World Summit, organized by the Adventure Travel Trade Association, also gathered local authorities, including Minister of Economy Álvaro García, Undersecretary of Tourism Verónica Pardo, and the Presidential Delegate for the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Region, José Ruiz.
All of this is made possible thanks to the talent and dedication of the people who give their best every day to provide unique experiences in the heart of Torres del Paine National Park.
